Unlocking the Doors of Opportunity: Why Learning a New Language in 2021 is a Smart Resolution

As we embrace the new year, many of us are setting ambitious goals to improve various aspects of our lives. One such goal that can enrich your personal and professional life is learning a new language. Whether you want to delve into the ancient Old English or embark on a journey to master a Scandinavian or Asian language, the benefits are manifold.

Why Learn a New Language?

Language learning isn't just about unlocking the doors to new cultures and literature; it opens up a plethora of opportunities. If you're interested in Old English, for instance, the study of Anglo-Saxon literature can enhance your knowledge and appreciation of historical texts, which may be particularly useful if you work in fields such as literature, history, or education.

Benefits of Language Learning

Cultural Understanding: Knowing another language means you can engage more deeply with the culture associated with that language. For example, reading Beowulf in its original form can provide a richer understanding of its narrative and cultural context. Networking Opportunities: A new language allows you to connect with people from different parts of the world. This can be particularly beneficial in today's globalized economy, opening doors to international collaborations and friendships. Cognitive Benefits: Learning a new language can improve cognitive skills such as memory, multitasking, and problem-solving. It can also delay the onset of age-related cognitive decline. Educational Advantages: Mastering multiple languages can give you a competitive edge in the job market, making you a more attractive candidate to employers. It can also broaden your academic horizons, providing you with a deeper understanding of various cultures and societies. Personal Fulfillment: Learning something new is inherently rewarding. It can boost your confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment.

My Journey: Fluency in Four Languages and an Unfading Desire for More

I am currently fluent in Slovak, Hungarian, and English. My journey with French is ongoing, and I've spent years traveling to French-speaking regions in the Pacific, deepening my connections and cultural understanding. Recently, I've started learning Spanish and Russian, and I am keen on adding a Scandinavian or Asian language to my repertoire, as these languages interest me and have personal benefits.

A Scandinavian Language or Korean/Japanese

I am particularly fascinated by Korean and Japanese not only because of their unique grammatical structures and writing systems, but also because of the rich cultural heritage they represent. Korean, with its vibrant pop culture, and Japanese, with its technological advancement and exquisite literature, hold endless fascination for me.

Learning Hausa

My personal strive to understand and connect better with the large Nigerian refugee community in my country has led me to adopt Hausa as a language to learn. Engaging with new languages equips one with the ability to better understand and communicate with diverse groups, fostering a more inclusive and empathetic society.

2021 Resolution: A Structured Approach to Language Learning

Here's how I plan to tackle language learning in 2021:

Continue Studying Russian: My long-term goal is to achieve fluency in Russian. I will focus on mastering verbs, which can be particularly challenging, while also improving my reading and speaking skills. Integrate German: I will make an effort to incorporate German into my learning plan. While I can already understand and listen to German, my writing and speaking skills are currently lacking. I aim to improve these areas to enhance my overall fluency. Discover French: I will explore the possibility of learning French as a potential future language. This will depend on the resources available and my time management.

Even a small step towards language learning can yield significant results. With dedication and a well-structured plan, I believe I can make meaningful progress in 2021. I invite you to join me in embracing the challenge of language learning and unlocking new doors of opportunity.
