What Makes the University of Tulsa Special: A Personal Perspective

When I went to school at the University of Tulsa in the 1960s, it was famous for its renowned School of Petroleum Engineering, one of the finest in the nation. The school attracted a large number of international students, particularly from countries like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Additionally, it boasted a prestigious Art Department, led by the celebrated regionalist painter Alexandre Hogue, and a nationally recognized English Department under the guidance of Tom Staley, who published extensively.

Highlighting the Educational Experience

The University of Tulsa stands out for its unique academic and personal experiences. My own experience led me to graduate with a Bachelor's in Psychology from TU in 2009. Prior to attending TU, I had studied for a year at California State University Long Beach and one year at California State University Northridge. Comparing these experiences, I found that TU provided the most special and cherished educational experience I was lucky enough to be part of.

Intimacy and Engagement

One of the most distinctive features of TU is the small class sizes, which foster an intimate and engaging environment. Professors know their students by name, and I have personal anecdotes of my teachers calling me if I missed a class. The professors at TU have open-door policies, making it easy to stop by their offices at any time for discussions or simple greetings. The psychology building was always abuzz with activity as I would regularly visit professors to talk about coursework or just to drop by for conversation.

Contentious University Atmosphere

TU feels like a quaint private university, rich in history with numerous stone buildings adorned with heavy doors and climbing ivy. This atmosphere creates a sense of magical mystery and academic dedication. It’s reminiscent of the enchanting world of Hogwarts, but without the capes. The academic rigor combined with the cozy, historic ambiance makes TU a unique and cherished educational experience.

Conclusion

Graduating with a Bachelor's in Psychology from the University of Tulsa in 2009, I can confidently say that my time there was the most precious educational journey I have been a part of. The university's commitment to small class sizes and the intimate, engaging environment created by its professors and students sets it apart. The historic and enchanting atmosphere of TU makes it a special place for anyone seeking a meaningful and memorable college experience.
