Choosing a college course can be a daunting decision, especially when it comes to determining the right fit for both your career aspirations and your personal interests. One of the most pivotal decisions I ever made was selecting a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemistry. This article delves into the reasoning behind my choice and the experience that has shaped my academic and professional path.

Unique Reasons Behind My Choice

One of the primary reasons for my choice of a BS in Chemistry was the extensive lab experience it offered. Unlike a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Chemistry, the BS program provided me with the practical hands-on training necessary to excel in scientific fields. The course structure was designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with experimental skills, which is essential for a well-rounded scientific education.

A BA in Chemistry would require me to take numerous humanities credits to maintain full-time status, which would have been a waste of my time and detracted from my scientific pursuits. On the other hand, taking a BS allowed me to focus on the core subjects, complemented by a few extra math and physics courses for additional support. These overlapping topics made it easier to maintain consistent performance across different subjects.

Unexpected Path to My Passion

I admission to Indiana University (IU) didn’t reveal a major initially, but it did offer an exciting opportunity. After acing the harder version of the introductory chemistry course (Chem 105), I was recommended to the Honors Program in Chemistry. This was a pivotal moment as it pushed me to reconsider my academic path.

The revelation that I was among the top 10 students in the course prompted me to seriously consider switching my major to chemistry. The genuine interest in the subject matter was a clear sign that chemistry was not just a course, but a passion.

Chemistry: My Heart and Dream

Chemistry became my undying passion, a gateway to a world filled with colors, excitement, and endless wonder. Here are the intrinsic reasons why chemistry holds a special place in my heart:

Colorful: The vibrant hues and reactions that can be seen in chemical processes are both captivating and enriching. High in Demand: With a growing emphasis on innovation and sustainability, demand for chemists continues to rise. Honorable: The scientific community recognizes the contributions of chemists, making the field a respected one. Eagerness: Chemistry instills a sense of eagerness and enthusiasm, driving one to constantly explore and discover new phenomena. Mysterious: The complexity and unpredictability of molecular interactions make the field fascinating and endlessly intriguing. Interesting: From synthesis to analysis, the field offers a variety of concepts and applications that keep the field dynamic and engaging. Symbolic: Chemical symbols and equations are the building blocks of scientific language, giving them a symbolic importance. Tautable: The precision and accuracy required in chemistry make it a tautable subject, where even minor details can impact outcomes. Rhythmic Romantic: The law of conservation of mass and other principles have a rhythmical quality, while the act of discovery can be romantic and fulfilling. Younghood: The spirit of exploration and discovery persists with chemistry, a subject that is both timeless and ever-evolving.

This journey was more than just an academic choice; it was a calling to use my knowledge to inspire and teach others. As a teacher, my passion for chemistry is not driven by financial gain but by the joy of imparting knowledge and skills to future generations.

Challenges and Rewards

My academic journey in chemistry has been a mix of challenges and rewards. Tackling advanced subjects like differential equations, modern physics, and physical chemistry simultaneously was indeed stressful. However, it also provided a comprehensive understanding of these topics and helped me develop a strong foundation in the field.

While it’s tough to recommend this pathway for everyone, understanding the subject matter can be a lot more manageable if you take courses in a logical order, such as taking differential equations before modern physics and physical chemistry.

Academically Challenging but Rewarding Minor Option

Even for someone who is majoring in a different direction, such as biology, choosing to minor in chemistry can be eminently worthwhile. For me, the challenge and satisfaction of excelling in a field where many face significant obstacles were compelling reasons to pursue a chemistry minor. This experience has not only enhanced my understanding of biological processes but also provided insights that are valuable in medical school.

The rigorous nature of chemistry coursework fosters resilience, meticulous attention to detail, and a deep appreciation for the scientific method. These qualities are invaluable in any scientific field and can significantly contribute to success in medical school and beyond.
