Why I Chose Penn State for My Higher Education
My journey to higher education didn't involve extensive research or a detailed comparison of various colleges. Instead, it was guided by a couple of key factors and personal connections. I pursued my College education at Penn State for my Junior and Senior years, and this decision has deeply influenced my professional journey.
The Decisive Factors at Penn State
I had the choice between two prestigious schools: the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) and IUP Indiana, Pennsylvania (IUP Indiana PA).
Penn State was located about 100 miles away, providing the independence I craved, while IUP was only a short 15-mile distance from home. However, my primary consideration was the opportunity to attend a top-tier university with the support of a smaller campus environment. The Capitol Campus of Penn State, which accommodated only juniors and seniors, was perfect for me. This campus offered a unique blend of big university resources with a tight-knit community atmosphere.
Personal Connections and Campus Visit
A key factor in my decision was a personal connection. In high school, one of my best friends was attending Penn State. This wasn't just a casual invitation; it was a pivotal moment that swayed my decision. Additionally, during a campus visit, I was impressed by the amenities and overall atmosphere of Penn State's campus.
Safety and Future Opportunities
Back in the early 1970s, the Vietnam War was a significant concern. The federal government offered student deferments for those who went to college as a means of avoiding the draft. Initially, Penn State provided such deferments, but this changed in my freshman year. Instead, the government introduced a draft lottery system.
My decision was largely emotional rather than analytical. I vowed to go to college regardless of the outcome, and at the time, no other school seemed more appealing than Penn State. Plus, there was a charm to the university that made it more attractive than others. Additionally, Penn State had a storied football team, which added to the university's appeal.
Post-Graduation Success and Networking
Little did I know that the name of my alma mater would open numerous doors for me. After graduating, I secured my first job out of 145 applicants due to my Penn State education. This experience taught me the value of a university's reputation in the job market.
My career in the petroleum industry saw me working for Getty, and later Texaco and Chevron. I retired at the age of 54, having built a fulfilling and successful career. Throughout my time in the industry, I met many fellow Penn State alumni, particularly within Getty/Texaco/Chevron. One memorable encounter was with a fellow PSU graduate who attended my high school's rival institution. We worked together for several years before we realized our connection!
Overall, my experience at Penn State, from choosing to attend to the valuable connections I made, has been a defining factor in my life and career. The support, education, and networking opportunities have all contributed to my success.
