Why Pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): A Personal Journey

Honestly, that is a question only YOU can answer. Nursing school is challenging; it demands a lot from you, your family, your mental health, and your finances. Knowing why you are pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and having a strong 'why' that carries you through the tough times is crucial prior to starting. Here are a few reasons I became a nurse, and why you, too, might consider this career path.

Why I Became a Nurse

When I decided to pursue a BSN, I had a strong desire to feel like my work was valuable and that I was making a difference. I wanted a job where I could be home with my kids while they were young, and I liked that nursing would provide many paths and opportunities for career changes. While the pay may not be exceptionally high, there are ways to increase your earning potential, and the flexibility and impact of this career make it worthwhile in the long run.

At the end of the day, I am grateful I chose nursing. It's a challenging field, but getting through the 60 semester hours of required courses and the 2-year Bachelor's of Nursing Science program is well worth it. There are also shorter options for those who prefer a quicker route, such as 2-year or less programs.

Traits That Suit Nursing

If you have a strong desire to help people and are a 'people' person who works well as part of a team, then nursing might be the right career for you. You will go home every day with the satisfaction of knowing that the challenges you faced throughout the day mattered. Nursing is now a vast field with numerous career paths, offering opportunities that historically were reserved for medical doctors (MDs).

In California, for example, the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) certifies public health nurses and advanced practice nurses. These roles include nurse practitioners (NPs), nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists, and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Psychiatric/mental health nurses are also certified, and all of these professionals must first obtain a California registered nurse license to qualify for their certification.

The field of nursing can range from minor surgery to anesthesiology, presenting extremely challenging yet rewarding directions. It's a career that offers significant personal and professional fulfillment, and it's a journey that, if you are committed, can lead to a very rewarding and impactful life.
