Why Pursue a College Degree and What It Has Brought Me
Throughout my life, the pursuit of a college degree has been an integral part of my journey. My aspirations for a degree have stemmed from a deep yearning to both expand my horizons and pursue a career in academia. As a young student, I was determined to attend college despite my parents’ unfinished degrees. My academic journey has been both challenging and rewarding, offering me invaluable experiences and insights.
Growing Horizons and Aspirations
The path to higher education began early for me. Even as a child, I had a clear vision for my future, aspiring to be a history or music major. My determination was evident, and despite poor SAT scores, I managed to secure a spot at Towson State University. This decision was not just a matter of academic pursuit but a lifelong goal. By attending college, I aimed to transcend the limited perspectives of my small town upbringing and immerse myself in a broader, more dynamic world. My academic experiences have been transformative, exposing me to diverse cultures, ideas, and perspectives that have shaped my worldview and reinforced my passion for continuous learning.
The Decision and Path Forward
One of the pivotal moments in my academic journey came in 1971 when I received a letter from the U.S. Army inviting me for an all-expense-paid trip to Vietnam. This experience brought to light the complexities and confusion surrounding military service and the reasons for entering combat. Instead of joining the military, I chose to attend Texas AM University on an NROTC scholarship. This decision was heavily influenced by my father, who wanted me to pursue higher education immediately after high school. His encouragement was instrumental in my choice, and I am grateful for it. Although I faced challenges in my first years of college, including initially struggling academically, I eventually found my footing and graduated with a solid 2.75 GPA.
Driving Forces Behind My Education
Motivated by various factors, my life has been shaped by the belief that a college degree is not just an academic pursuit but a path to personal and professional growth. Here are some key reasons why I pursued and am grateful for my college degree:
Expanding Knowledge and Understanding
My initial motivation for pursuing a college degree was to gain a deeper understanding of the world and the concepts that governed our society. My history and music classes, in particular, lit a fire in my chest, igniting a thirst for knowledge that has remained with me to this day. College provided a platform for me to explore a wide array of subjects, including American history, which I excelled in and continues to fascinate me.
Financial Stability and Career Advancement
A college education has also played a crucial role in enhancing my financial stability and career opportunities. While there are certainly exceptions, a college degree often opens up doors to higher-paying jobs and career advancement. The ability to secure financial success without being consumed by work is a significant benefit of a college education. Moreover, in both professional and personal spheres, having a degree can significantly elevate one's standing and influence.
Leveled Playing Field
Education often levels the playing field, providing a way to take advantage of opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. Whether it's through social connections or professional networks, a degree can serve as a stepping stone to success. Understanding how the "haves" attain their status, whether through education or other means, can provide valuable insights and shortcuts. For me, education has been a powerful tool in shaping my life and career.
Building Confidence and Authenticity
Finally, a college degree often instills a sense of confidence and authenticity that is hard to come by through self-study or experience alone. Degrees, along with social status and professional credentials, are often required to be taken seriously in important matters. While not inherently logical, the presence of letters behind one's name can open doors in unexpected areas. This confidence, combined with the belief that others also see you as capable, can fuel your aspirations and help you achieve your goals.
Despite the challenges and the realization that college is not for everyone, my journey through higher education has been enriching. It has allowed me to grow, connect with like-minded individuals, and pursue my dreams with greater clarity. The value of a college degree lies in its ability to enhance our lives in countless ways, and I remain grateful for the opportunities it has afforded me.
