Will Attending College Determine My Success?
The notion that a college degree is the sole determinant of success is a common misconception. Success is multifaceted and can be achieved in various ways, regardless of whether one attends college or not.
Success Beyond College Degrees
Many people have achieved remarkable success without pursuing higher education. They have chosen alternative paths such as vocational training, entrepreneurship, self-education, and gaining practical work experience.
Success is often defined by personal goals, skills, determination, and the ability to adapt and learn throughout life. If you have a clear plan and are willing to work hard, you can find success in many different ways, with or without a college degree.
A Diverse Path to Success
Consider the example of my son, who did not graduate from college but obtained his GED, became a plumber, and started his own business. Despite not attending college, he now owns a successful plumbing company, a house, a truck, a car, and a motorcycle. Moreover, he enjoys surfing in Puerto Rico and where he currently resides.
He managed to pay off his expenses, such as his schooling, in less than a year because the costs were significantly lower than those of a college degree. This illustrates that success can be achieved through various means, not just traditional higher education.
Alternative Paths and Their Benefits
While having a college degree may provide certain advantages, such as access to certain jobs and faster career advancement, it is not the only path to success. Here are some reasons why alternative paths can also lead to success:
Critical Thinking and Adaptability
Individuals who have not attended college but have pursued alternative paths, such as reading, self-education, and practical work experience, often develop strong critical thinking skills. They can be trained to be open and flexible, to question and research, and to distinguish between good and bad research.
Communication Skills
These individuals may also be more articulate, as they have honed their communication skills through engaging in discussions and debates on various topics, including politics and international news.
Corporate Opportunities
In some corporate environments, individuals with college degrees may have an inside track and move faster up the career ladder. However, nepotism can play a significant role, as evidenced by the current administration. It is important to recognize that success is not solely determined by education.
Personal Growth and Success
Regardless of the educational path you choose, personal growth and success can be achieved through other means. If you have continued to read, question, research, and engage with the world around you, you can develop skills and knowledge comparable to those of your college-educated peers.
For instance, you could become a talented furniture maker, cabinet maker, or staircase builder, and own your own business. These are valid and successful paths, and they do not equate to failure. Success is defined by your natural talents and the opportunities you seize.
Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to whether attending college determines your success. Success is a personal journey, and it depends on your goals, skills, determination, and the opportunities you choose to pursue.
The key is to recognize that success is not just about higher education. By embracing alternative paths and continuously learning, you can achieve success in your own unique way.
