Wright State University: A Personal Experience
In my experience, Wright State University has offered both a spectacular and unforgettable academic journey, as well as a series of challenging and disheartening moments. My journey can be broadly divided into two parts—my positive experiences in the early semesters and the harrowing tale of my last year due to a roommate's disability.
Spectacular Experience
I am currently in my third semester at Wright State University, and overall, my experience has been beautiful. The faculty is wonderful, and the campus is smaller than Ohio State, making it easier to navigate through the tunnels during the winter months. Additionally, it's cheaper compared to other institutions, which is a significant plus.
The Roommate Experience: A Choice That Had Consequences
During my time in the music department from 2002 to 2003, I encountered my worst experience at Wright State University. The decision to attend was hesitant, as convincing my non-artistic family about my desire to study Music History and Literature was challenging. Despite my enthusiasm, the initial application process seemed flawed when the university asked if I minded being roomed with a student with a physical disability. I mistakenly marked no, assuming it was irrelevant.
Roommate Objectives and Initial Call
The application error led me to a challenging situation. I received a letter proposing that I would be staying in the newly constructed honor's dorm with a roommate named Daniel. My initial encounter with him was peculiar due to language barriers and my roommate's frailty. During a phone call, I struggled to communicate effectively, leading to confusion on both ends. Despite the initial setback, I still felt it was my duty to attempt familiarity, considering Daniel's disability and the accommodations made for him.
Adapting to the New Setup
Upon move-in day, I was faced with a sleepless night and the practical challenges of compact accommodation. Daniel's needs required significant adjustments, resulting in me having less personal space. While I felt acutely aware of my privilege, I was committed to understanding and supporting my roommate's needs, acknowledging the social and financial implications of his condition.
The Impact on Academics and Personal Life
The combination of my roommate's 24/7 assistance and the responsibilities that ensued significantly impacted my academic performance. I was consistently under stress, leading to late nights, drinking, and an overall depraved feeling. My professors, including self-centered individuals, contributed to my frustration, resulting in dropping courses and changing majors. This process became a learning curve, teaching me to advocate for personal space and privacy.
The Path Forward
By the second year, it became clear that a different living situation was needed. Despite the challenges, I eventually secured a new dorm room, only to find that the social dynamics were even more challenging. The transition back to a larger dorm was difficult, and I faced further discomfort and loneliness.
Conclusion
The tenure at Wright State University serves as a sobering reminder of the myriad challenges faced by students, particularly those with disabilities. It also highlights the importance of considering the responsibilities one might take on when making educational choices. Despite the struggles, I carry the lessons learned and the experiences with me, hoping to contribute positively to future educational communities.
